2 silver st, hawick, TD9 0AD

damascus drum cafe and books provides a setting where people of the town and wayfarers meet and enjoy one another's company with good coffee, tea and light meals, fairtrade and homeproduced. In the tradition of coffee houses worldwide, it is a place for all manner of conviviality and conversation. The cafe hosts 'open mike' nights, readings and book launches for local musicians, poets and writers.

damascus drum opened its doors at 2 silver street in 2005. the building, originally built in 1881, had been a bootmakers and shoe repair shop. the site overlooks the slitrig river in the heart of the scottish borders town of hawick.

christopher and frances ryan restored the old shop on the ground floor, retaining most of the original features including the wood panelled walls. the floor was renewed with reclaimed boards from the recently demolished pringles woollen mills in hawick. damascus drum is here simply for the pleasure of it.
